RV Antifreeze vs. Windshield Washer Fluid: What Should You Use to Winterize Ag Equipment?

When it’s time to winterize a sprayer or other agricultural equipment, it can be tempting to use windshield washer fluid because it is inexpensive and easy to find. However, windshield washer fluid and RV antifreeze are designed for two very different jobs.

Windshield washer fluid is formulated to clean glass and remain usable in a vehicle’s washer reservoir. RV antifreeze is formulated to protect plumbing and water-system components during seasonal storage. That difference matters when fluid will sit inside pumps, valves, hoses and seals for several months.

BURST PROTECTION TO -50°F

The RV antifreeze featured by Jenner provides burst protection to -50°F. This means it is formulated to help protect winterized systems from the expansion that occurs as temperatures fall.

The -50°F rating is a burst-protection rating. It does not mean the product will remain completely liquid at -50°F. Always follow the product label and the equipment manufacturer’s winterization instructions.

BETTER PROTECTION FOR EQUIPMENT COMPONENTS

RV antifreeze includes corrosion protection for pumps, valves and metal components. Its ethanol-free formula is also a better fit for long-term contact with many seals and hoses than an alcohol-heavy fluid designed primarily for cleaning windshields.

This can be especially important for equipment with multiple valves, fittings, hose runs and pump components where leftover moisture can cause damage during storage.

A MORE PURPOSE-BUILT WINTERIZATION FLUID

The featured RV antifreeze is biodegradable and designed with user and environmental safety in mind. It is ready to use, so there is no need to dilute it before circulating it through the system.

Before adding any winterization fluid:

1. Drain as much water as possible from the system.
2. Clean filters, strainers and tanks.
3. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s winterization procedure.
4. Circulate the fluid until it reaches every hose, valve, boom section and nozzle body.
5. Label the equipment so everyone knows it has been winterized.
